The Power of Your Thoughts: How Men Can Take Control of Their Mindset

Every day, we have thousands of thoughts. It’s almost as if we’re constantly bombarded by an internal dialogue that plays on repeat. Some thoughts are quick and fleeting, others stick with us longer, shaping how we view the world and ourselves. And when was the last time you stopped to consider just how much power these thoughts hold over your life?

Imagine this: a group of people who are terrified of spiders. They’ve gathered in a room for a session to help them overcome their fear using self-hypnosis. The test starts with the facilitator showing them an empty cage where the spiders are supposed to go. But here’s the fascinating part—the moment they see that empty cage, their bodies react as though the spiders are already there. Their heart rates spike, and panic sets in, even though there’s no actual spider. Their minds are so powerful, they’re creating fear based on a single thought.

Now, think about a time when you were able to see something vividly in your mind. Have you ever imagined biting into a lemon? Did you feel the texture of the fruit? Could you smell it? Even if there was no lemon in front of you, your mind created the sensations of taste, smell, and texture. It wasn’t real, but it felt real. That’s the power of thought.

Most of the time, we don’t even question the beliefs we hold about ourselves or the world. They start as a single thought, but over time, we accept them as truths without ever testing them. For example, when you think about your self-worth, your abilities, or the challenges in front of you—are you basing those beliefs on solid evidence, or on stories you’ve been telling yourself for years?

We often hold beliefs that we’ve picked up from others, from our families, culture, or even society. These beliefs can shape how we view success, relationships, and even our place in the world. But here’s the thing—just because you believe something doesn’t make it true. The same way that you can imagine the taste of a lemon without ever having one, you can change your beliefs. You can choose to test them, challenge them, and reshape them.

So much of what we think is rooted in how we’ve been conditioned. It’s not always based on reality. And that’s where the power lies. You get to decide whether you let your thoughts rule you, or whether you take control. When we begin to question our beliefs and how they’ve shaped our mindset, we realize that we don’t have to live by the scripts we’ve been given. You’re not stuck with the thoughts you’ve inherited; you can rewrite them.

The way we think about ourselves, our challenges, and the world around us shapes how we show up every single day. So, the next time you find yourself feeling inadequate, stressed, or uncertain, ask yourself, “Is this thought really true? Where did it come from, and what evidence do I have to support it?” More often than not, you’ll find that your thoughts are just that—thoughts. They don’t have to define you.
