Is there really a way to "reset" from burnout, or does it need more than that?
Burnout in men rarely announces itself. It does not arrive with drama or a clear breaking point. It creeps in quietly, underneath the functioning, underneath the delivering, underneath the man who is still doing everything that needs doing while something inside him slowly goes somewhere else.
There comes a point where the man who has been running on expectation and obligation stops and asks a question he has never asked before. Who am I, actually, when the job is not in the room? When the role is not defining the answer? Most men have never sat with that question long enough to hear the answer. They have been too busy being what everyone else needed them to be.
What Burnout in Men Running on Empty Actually Looks Like
Burnout in men is not always the dramatic version. The men I work with are usually still functioning well by most external measures when they come to me. They are still delivering. Still showing up. Still getting things done. But there is a flatness to it that they cannot shake. A sense of going through motions that stopped feeling like their own life.
Some men describe it as being switched off. Others say they feel like they are watching themselves from a slight distance, doing the thing but not quite inhabiting it. Others just say they are tired in a way that sleep does not fix. That is burnout in capable men. It arrives quietly and starts turning the lights down one at a time.
What Resetting Actually Means
It is not about stopping everything and starting again. It is about going underneath the patterns that have been running and finding out what is actually there. What you actually want. What actually matters to you when the noise dies down. That process does not take years. In hours, not years.
