Why do the most capable men burn out the hardest?
Burnout in capable men does not look like weakness. It looks like a man who is still delivering, still hitting targets, still doing everything that needs doing, but running on a fuel that is coming from somewhere darker than ambition. Most men in this position do not know it is burnout. They just know they cannot stop.
For most of my adult life I tied my worth to what I could produce. What I could achieve. What I could provide. It was not a conscious decision. It was just the operating system I was running. Most of the men I work with are running the same programme.
The Cage You Did Not See Being Built
The cage is built slowly from the reasonable decisions of a capable man. You say yes to the thing because it needs doing. You take on the extra because nobody else will. You push through the tiredness because stopping feels worse than continuing. Each decision is defensible. The cumulative effect is a life that looks impressive from the outside and feels like a trap from the inside.
The man in the cage is not weak. He is a capable man who has been running a programme that was never built to sustain him long-term.
What Getting Out of the Cage Looks Like
It starts with understanding what the cage is made of. Not the circumstances, but the patterns underneath them. The beliefs about worth and productivity and what it means to be a man who provides. Those patterns were not chosen consciously. They were absorbed. And because they were absorbed rather than chosen, they can be changed.
The machine does not have to stop. The drive stays. What changes is what is running underneath it. When that shifts, the cage dissolves.
