Who Are You, Really? Understanding the Forces That Shape You as a Man

Ever wondered if you’re truly your own person, or if you’re just the result of your programming, conditioning, and beliefs? It’s a question that deserves some real thought.

From the moment we’re born, various forces shape who we are. Family, culture, education, and peers all leave their mark on us. Early on, our families teach us what’s right and wrong, what’s important, and how to behave. These lessons form the foundation of who we are. As we grow, societal norms and cultural influences help define our perspectives and actions. School plays a huge role in shaping how we think, problem-solve, and interact with the world. And our friends and social groups either reinforce or challenge the beliefs we already hold, influencing how we see ourselves and the world around us.

But it’s not just external influences that shape us. Our beliefs, both conscious and subconscious, act as the mental frameworks through which we interpret everything. Limiting beliefs, often rooted in past failures or negative feedback, hold us back, telling us we’re not good enough. On the flip side, empowering beliefs push us forward, driven by past successes or support from others. But the most powerful beliefs are those we’re unaware of—those subconscious beliefs we’ve absorbed over time, which play a huge role in shaping our identity.

Understanding the neuroscience behind it all can give us more insight into how we’re shaped. Four key brain regions work together to influence how we respond to situations, how we handle emotions, and how we develop beliefs. The amygdala triggers our emotional responses and processes emotional memories, shaping how we react to the world. The prefrontal cortex helps us manage those emotional responses and supports our decision-making. The hippocampus forms and retrieves emotional memories, linking our experiences to how we see the world. And the hypothalamus regulates the physical side of emotions, controlling things like heart rate and stress responses.

When you understand how all these factors—programming, conditioning, beliefs, and brain function—work together, it becomes clearer how our identities are formed. So, are you truly who you think you are, or are you just the product of all these influences? The answer is probably a bit of both.

The journey to self-discovery isn’t always easy, but it’s worth it. By digging into the layers that shape who you are, you can start to understand yourself on a deeper level. It’s empowering and transformative to realise that you have the ability to challenge those beliefs and influences, and start living in a way that’s more authentic to who you truly want to be.
